How does your media product represent particular social groups?
On the left is a photograph which I took for my contents page of one of my magazines artists Kate Williamson. On the right is a photograph of the music artist Miley Cyrus. In both images the models are looking directly into the camera to attract the audience. I deliberately posed my shot to look at the camera so that my model would catch the readers attention and make them feel like the magazine was personal to them. Both the images have the people looking back over their shoulder. This pose makes both the artists look quite confident, in Miley's image she has her shoulder slightly more raised than Kate's. I think that my image makes Kate look more approachable and welcoming to the audience compared to Miley's this is because she has her arms wrapped around her which makes it look like she could be hiding something. Also Miley's facial expression looks more intense and posed in her image whereas Kate's smile looks more natural and makes the audience want to read more about her.
Both of the images are mid shots which means that you can only see the top part of the persons torso. Both of the shots are also shot from a straight on angle with only the model turning to a side angle to look over their shoulder. By making my image a mid shot it means the audience can clearly see Kate's facial expressions and her body language which gives them an idea of the type of person she is.
In Miley's image she is wearing a studded jacket which gives the image a rock feel. I also dressed Kate in a leather jacket as back when doing my research I found that this is something which I associate with the rock genre and something my target audience will be able to identify with. Miley's image is in black and white which doesn't give the readers a very good indication of the type of make up she is wearing. In my image I made sure Kate's eyes and lips stood out by using black eyeliner and red lipstick, this is because this type of make up makes these features stand out and catches the audiences attention. The two images also show quite similar hairstyles as both of their hairs are quite messy and look like they haven't been payed much attention to, this also adds to the rock feel.
The lighting in both the images is also very similar. Both of the light sources are coming from above the person shining down onto their face which creates a dark shadow behind them. The lighting in my image was very important at highlighting Kate's face to the audience and making her make up stand out. Although my image contains quite a lot of light it also has created a dark shadow behind Kate which I think adds to the rock style of the image.
